The original AE2 Signature was one of the more ambitious compact loudspeakers Acoustic Energy ever built, and it earned a following in the 1990s that has not really faded.

The 40th Anniversary Edition is not a reissue. Acoustic Energy's in-house team redeveloped the design around the modern driver platform introduced in the AE1 40th Anniversary, then built a larger cabinet capable of using it properly. It sits above the AE1 in the range and is aimed at listeners who want more bass weight, more headroom, and more scale without giving up what makes a great standmount worth owning in the first place.

Drivers

The AE2 uses the same newly developed tweeter and mid/bass drivers as the AE1 40th Anniversary, arranged in a larger offset M-T-M layout.

The 29mm anodised aluminium dome tweeter runs a larger 29mm voice coil with more radiating area, ferrofluid cooled and damped for better power handling and thermal stability under load. It keeps the fast, open metal-dome character that has defined Acoustic Energy since the beginning.

Two 125mm spun, hard-anodised aluminium mid/bass drivers carry a thick ceramic coating on both faces of the cone. The added rigidity means higher efficiency, lower distortion, and considerably more air moved than a single-driver design manages.

Cabinet

Going from one mid/bass driver to two, and from two ports to three front-firing reflex ports, makes a bigger box necessary. Bigger boxes tend to talk back. Acoustic Energy's answer was to add strategically placed internal steel plates to the bracing so the AE2's cabinet stays as quiet as the smaller AE1's.

Construction is Acoustic Energy's RSC constrained-layer HDF and bitumen, 18mm to 32mm thick depending on the panel. The finish is ten layers deep in either High Gloss Walnut or High Gloss Black, with magnetic cloth grilles.

Crossover

A minimalist, low-order crossover at 2.2kHz. Acoustic Energy deliberately kept the component count low to preserve timing and directness rather than chase a flatter measurement with a more complex network. This is a speaker voiced for the way music moves, not for a spec sheet.

Room and system

Acoustic Energy positions the AE2 40th Anniversary for rooms of roughly 25 square metres (about 270 square feet) and up, where the extra bass extension and dynamic headroom have space to work. In a smaller room, the AE1 40th Anniversary is usually the better fit.

At 88dB sensitivity and a nominal 6 ohms, the AE2 is not a difficult load, but it responds to an amplifier with real current delivery and some power in reserve. Good stands are not optional here.

AE1 or AE2?

Both use the same drivers and the same design philosophy. The difference is scale.
