Overview

Ray Kimber designed the 4PR in 1979 after noticing stage lighting rigs were dumping RF noise into nearby speaker cables. His fix, a counter-opposed helix braid that cancels noise without a shield, became the foundation of every cable Kimber has built since. More than four decades later, the 4PR remains one of the most respected value picks in high-end audio.

Key Features

  • Conductors: 8 strands of 19.5 AWG OFE copper per leg, VariStrand geometry
  • Aggregate gauge: ~13–14 AWG per leg
  • Geometry: Counter-opposed helix braid, Kimber's signature noise-cancelling design that needs no external shield
  • Dielectric: Polyethylene
  • Capacitance: ~38 pF/ft (Kimber-published spec)
  • Recognition: hi-fi+ Editor's Choice Award, 2024
  • Hand-built and terminated to order

4PR vs 8PR: Which One Do You Need?

Both cables use the same VariStrand copper, the same counter-opposed helix braid, and the same polyethylene dielectric. The difference is conductor count, and what that does to gauge and current handling.

4PR 8PR
Conductors per leg 4 (8 strands) 8 (16 strands)
Aggregate gauge ~13–14 AWG ~10–11 AWG
Best suited for Bookshelf and stand-mount speakers, lower-to-moderate power amps, shorter runs Floorstanders or harder-to-drive speakers, higher-power amps, longer runs
Sonic character Open, quick, and detailed, strong top-end extension Fuller-bodied bottom end, more current for demanding loads

Rule of thumb: if you're running a modest bookshelf pair off a moderate integrated amp over a run under 10–15 feet, 4PR is likely all the cable you need. Step up to 8PR once you're driving floorstanders, a harder speaker load, a more powerful amp, or a longer cable run, where the extra conductors and lower resistance start to earn their keep.

Why Kimber Kable

Most cable brands wrap their products in vague claims about "musicality" and leave it there. Kimber has spent over 40 years doing the opposite, publishing real measured resistance, capacitance, and inductance specs and letting the numbers make the case. Every cable in their lineup, from the 4PR up to the $20,000+ Select series, is built on the same counter-opposed helix principle Ray Kimber developed solving a real engineering problem in 1979, and every one is still made in Ogden, Utah.

That consistency is the point: buying the 4PR isn't buying a stripped-down "starter" product disconnected from the rest of the brand. It's buying the same design philosophy that shows up in Kimber's most expensive cables, at a fraction of the cost. It's a big part of why Kimber shows up on more "Recommended Component" lists than almost any other cable maker, and why the 4PR specifically is often the cable people point to when they want to prove that better sound doesn't require a bigger budget.
