The Unison Research Unico Primo is a hybrid integrated amplifier that pairs a single ECC83/12AX7 tube preamp stage with an 80-watt MOSFET power stage, hand-assembled in Treviso, Italy. It's one of the most respected amplifiers in its class: the kind of component that stays in a system for decades, not years.

For listeners who've wanted the warmth and midrange realism of tubes without the maintenance overhead of a full valve design, the Primo is the answer. The tube handles the signal shaping; the solid-state output stage delivers the current, control, and bass grip. You get both, with none of the trade-offs.

The Sound

"This slim, sleek performer could be called the NAD 3020 of Italy, so popular has it become." — Stereophile

The Primo's character is distinctly musical: warm without being soft, detailed without being clinical. The ECC83 input stage gives vocals and acoustic instruments a natural, three-dimensional quality that pure solid-state designs in this class consistently struggle to replicate. The MOSFET output stage keeps the bass tight and the dynamics honest.

What you'll notice first: the midrange. What keeps you coming back: the way it makes the whole system disappear.

  • Natural, even tonal balance across the frequency range

  • Smooth, lifelike midrange, particularly strong on vocals and strings

  • Solid bass control and authority — damping factor above 50

  • Refined top-end with no grain or harshness

  • Wide, stable soundstage with strong channel separation (83.7dB)

Looking to build a complete system around the Primo? Bundle with Opera Prima V2 speakers.

Made in Italy

"An unusually fine bass — rich but pure and unerringly tuneful, as well as being essentially free of the romantic haze that persists with some valve amps." — TechRadar

The Unico Primo is hand-assembled at Unison Research's Treviso facility in the Veneto region, not contract-manufactured to a price. The company describes the process as nearly artisanal: slow, deliberate, with components selected for both sonic character and long-term reliability.

The chassis is machined brushed aluminum, built on a three-point suspension system to minimize vibration interference. It's an amplifier designed to look as good as it sounds, and to stay in your system long enough for that to matter.

The Primo drives most bookshelf and floorstanding speakers without strain. It pairs particularly well with Acoustic Energy AE500, Ruark Sabre, KEF R3 Meta, Dynaudio Emit, and Sonus Faber Lumina: speakers in the 87-91dB sensitivity range that benefit from clean, high-current delivery. If you're running anything below 85dB or below 4 ohms nominal, worth a conversation first.

How It Compares

The Unico Primo competes directly with the Rega Elex-R, Musical Fidelity M5si, and NAD M10 V2. Against those, it trades some outright measurement performance for a more organic, musically satisfying character, a trade most listeners in this category are happy to make. If you're coming from a budget integrated and want to understand what "the next level" actually sounds like, this is a strong first move into serious hi-fi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Unico Primo have a phono stage? Yes. Current production units ship with a factory-installed MM/MC phono card included as standard. It handles both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges (MM: 47k ohms/220pF; MC: 100 ohms/440pF), so you can connect a turntable directly without an external phono preamp. Contact us if you want to confirm compatibility with your specific cartridge.

What speakers work best with the Unico Primo? It's most at home with 4-8 ohm speakers in the 87-92dB sensitivity range. Acoustic Energy, KEF, Dynaudio, and Ruark all pair well. The damping factor above 50 and high-current MOSFET output stage mean it handles most modern bookshelf and floorstanding speakers without strain. Very low-sensitivity or difficult-load speakers are better matched with a higher-current design.

How long do the tubes last in the Unico Primo? The ECC83/12AX7 input tube typically lasts 5,000 to 10,000 hours under normal use. When it eventually needs replacing, it's an inexpensive, widely available tube you can source and swap yourself. It's one of the reasons the hybrid format makes sense: you get the sonic benefit of tubes with almost none of the maintenance burden of a full valve design. Upgrading the stock tube is also a well-documented way to push performance further without touching anything else in the system.

Can the Unico Primo drive floorstanding speakers? Yes, in most cases. 80W into 8 ohms is enough for the majority of modern floorstanders at reasonable listening levels. The MOSFET output stage and damping factor above 50 help with dynamic peaks and bass control.
